Through the vast amount of research conducted by scientists and medical professionals, a link between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure has become conclusive. One of these theories claims that asbestos begins by irritating and swelling mesothelial cells. Once this has happened, permanent scars form, cells are damaged, and cancer will ultimately begin to develop. Another theory presented by medical professionals is that asbestos fibers initially enter and make contact with cells. Once the fibers have made contact, they begin disturbing the process of cell division. Once this has happened, cancer develops because of the detrimental cellular changes.

Yet another theory presented by medical professionals claims that once the asbestos fibers have entered the body, the cells react by producing oncoproteins. These are molecules that disrupt cellular division by causing the mesothelial cells to disregard the restraints of standard cellular division. Once this has happened, mesothelioma begins to develop.

Another theory presents that the asbestos fibers cause the body to begin creating free radicals. These are vicious molecules that do two things – damage and corrupt DNA and cause mutation and cancer in cells. The correlating component in all theories of mesothelioma causes is the fact that the asbestos fibers damage cells.
